Some days Most days, I’m over emotional. I let my emotions dictate my words, actions, and thoughts. If I’m struggling with anger, I speak louder, move quicker, and I’m clothed with harshness. If I’m impatient, proud, or teary, my family is usually first to see it and be on the receiving end of it all.
So what does God say about my emotions? I know what I think/say about them… I am full of excuses and have every reason why I’m acting the way I am. I’m tired. I’m hungry. I’m sick. I’m hormonal. I’m
________. Sound familiar?
Let’s look at what God says about my emotions, because really,
He’s the one who created me and He is sovereign over my whole being.
TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR HEART FIRST
Luke 6:45: The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
TAKE OFF YOUR OLD CLOTHES AND PUT ON HIS
Ephesians 4:22-24: 22 to put off your old self,[a] which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 andto be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
WALK WORTHY/PREFER ONE ANOTHER
Ephesians 4:1-2: I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
BE SLOW TO GET ANGRY
Proverbs 16:32: Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty,
and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.
Ecclesiastes 7:9: Be not quick in your spirit to become angry,
for anger lodges in the heart[a] of fools.
WALK IN THE SPIRIT
Galatians 5:16-17: But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
CRUCIFY YOUR FLESH
Galatians 5:23-24: 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
CONTENTMENT BRINGS HIS STRENGTH
Philippians 4:11-13: 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
BE EQUIPPED FOR BATTLE
Ephesians 6:11-17: 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
THESE VIRTUES ARE YOURS FOR THE TAKING
2 Peter 1:4-9: 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue,[a] and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities[b] are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.
ARE YOU THINKING EARTHLY MINDED?
1 John 2:16-17: 16 For all that is in the world— the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life[a]—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
THINK HEAVENLY MINDED
Colossians 3:1-3 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
