I’m reading the book The Practice Of Godliness, by Jerry Bridges and it’s rocking my faith. I’ve been a Christian since a young girl, but this book has a way of really spelling out what a godly life really should look like. I love this quote:
The practice of godliness is an exercise or discipline that focuses upon God. From this God-ward attitude arises the character and conduct that we usually think of as godliness. So often we try to develop Christian character and conduct without taking the time to develop god-centered devotion. We try to please God without taking the time to walk with Him and develop a relationship with Him. This is impossible to do.
So I’m putting away trying to produce Christian characteristics without the work of getting to know my Savior better. Ascribing to Him the glory due His name.
His definition of godliness is devotion to God which results in a life that is pleasing to Him.
One thing I’ve been doing is memorizing a different scripture each day that portrays devotion to God. A few this week have been:
Worship is a central piece of how I show my gratitude towards God. It’s a heart-attitude in which the tune of my heart is in step with God’s tune. When the attitude of my heart is, yes Father, I’m ready to listen and obey because I love the God I serve… worship is a beautiful melody of notes on key. No off pitch moments, no straining in the soul, but an effortless and beautiful posture of the heart, bowed down in humble adoration.
