I love to decorate! When I grew up, it wasn’t always this way. You could find me climbing trees, making forts in the woods, skipping rocks, swimming or playing sports. If you told me that one day I would enjoy decorating a home or spending time reading for fun, I would have thought you were crazy.
Maybe this explains you and your home? Are you at a loss when it comes to decorating ideas? I would love to offer you some simple tips to get started.
First, Declutter Your Spaces
When you look around your home, what feels chaotic? Do you have clutter, stacks of paper, and piles of randomness? Set a timer for twenty minutes, play some motivating music or a podcast, and start removing those items that bring you anxiety. Go through them and get rid of anything you don’t need. If you think you might need them in the future, box them up and put them in a basement or area you can get them “out of sight”. When the timer goes off, take a short break and then go onto your next space and do the same thing when you have the time. Start with the level of your home that is seen the most.
Next, Figure Out Your Color Palette
Every person’s style will not be the same. Figure out what colors bring peace and a warmth to your home. For me, I love using white, black, gray, taupe, greens, and wood. These are the items that I am going to use the most when decorating. Look at the room and see which colors and things just don’t belong. What can stay? Pack away or donate items that just don’t work anymore.
Don’t Break The Bank When It Comes To Decorating.
Most of the time, it’s going to be the way your family and guests feel when they enter your home. I know it is hard not to get caught up in wanting to buy all the favorite things from all the favorite stores, because that’s what you see on HGTV. Most people don’t have the budget of Joanna Gaines (whom I love to pieces). When I have some extra funds in my budget, I like to shop for things that don’t cost much. Examples of places I enjoy to shop:
- Target Dollar Spot / Clearance
- Dollar Stores
- Home Goods
- At Home
- Hobby Lobby
- Big Lots
- Marshalls
- TJ Maxx
- Aldi
- Walmart
- Thrift Stores
Browse these places for items that fit your new color scheme. Don’t just grab anything. Find things that will fit the new theme of your home and the feeling you want to give. Remember, you don’t want more clutter! Add things that will bring balance and warmth depending on the current season/time of year.
Final Tips and Tricks
Adding whites lights to a space and/or candles adds a nice touch! Things with words on them that will partner with the message of your home is also important. Things like cheap throw pillows and blankets can add a nice cozy feel as well.
